Why does a slice of bread always fall buttered side down? |
Bread often lands on the floor with the buttered side down, but this is not caused by either the bread ot the butter. Rather, it is simply due to the height of the table from which it has fallen. Most dining tables are about 1m high. A slice of bread will usually slip off the edge of the plate sideways and this - in combination with gravity - will cause it to turn on a horizontal axis. If the bread were to fall from a low soon it will not turn to far enough and so would land with the un buttered side. The same would happen if the bread fell from a table that was2m high because in that case it would complete a full revolution. However, most dining tables are just the right height for the drop to be sufficient for half a rotation - which means bread often lands on its buttered side.
